Integrated tourism and urban development program for the colonial city of Santo Domingo
The project implemented by the EU and IDB seeks to revitalize the urban, economic and cultural aspects of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. While the Dominican Republic is one of the main tourist destinations in the region and the Colonial City of Santo Domingo is a strategic axis of tourism and urban development, it is also characterised by marginalised and segregated households, with a high presence of low-income families, and high degrees of urban spatial degradation. Nevertheless, it has the potential to become a world-renowned tourist attraction by investing in areas such as transport and mobility, spatial planning and land, housing and habitat, security, and fiscal and institutional capacity, which would in turn diversify tourism in the Dominican Republic and contribute to the economic growth and social well-being of Dominicans.
This project is developing a sustainable urban mobility plan, including an electromobility pilot project, and a housing improvement programme, all while addressing gender equality objectives.
The project is expected to deliver the following:
- increased number of passengers using electric vehicles for travel and reduced pollutant emissions;
- reduced inadequate housing in the northern neighbourhoods of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo and increased issuance of legal instruments of housing tenure in the name of the beneficiaries;
- participation of female household heads in the legal regularisation of the property deeds and training of women in eco-driving, awareness-raising, rights and dignified treatment of passengers with disabilities and/or reduced mobility and maintenance of electric vehicles;
- increased average expenditure per foreign tourist, occupancy rate and number of international tourists visiting the colonial area.
